Many of us remember this picture because of Varg Vikernes and his project BURZUM(the cover of “Umskiptar” 2012). But only few know that the place depicted on the picture is real. It is located in Sogneforde. There are ancient burials and menhirs. This sacred pagan place remained untouchable for a long time. There was a tall old birch in the middle of the mound which died in a storm in 1839. Once poets and artists came here for inspiration and later immortalized this image in their poems and paintings. Now there is nothing left from sacredness and inspiration – mounds are surrounded by the houses and the gas station.

But the day will come and a young birch sprout will let it roots deep into the ancient mound again and only ruins overgrown with moss will remind about the era of soulless urbanism.
